Dal prossimo 27 ottobre inaugurerà presso la Somerset House di Londra una mostra "da brivido": The Horror Show!: A Twisted Tale of Modern Britain. La mostra curata da Iain Forsyth, Jane Pollard e Claire Catterall, esplora il contributo della categoria Horror negli ultimi cinquant'anni di produzione creativa, con una lunga lista di artisti partecipanti e oltre 200 opere in esposizione. Tre parole chiave suddividono la mostra in tre atti, ciascuno dei quali interpreta un'epoca particolare dagli anni Settanta del Novecento a oggi attraverso la lente archetipica del mostro, del fantasma e della strega.
Tremate, tremate, le streghe son tornate! Alla prestigiosa Somerset House di Londra inaugurerà il prossimo 27 ottobre una mostra molto particolare, quasi da brivido. The Horror Show!: A Twisted Tale of Modern Britain è il titolo scelto dai co-curatori Iain Forsyth e Jane Pollard, filmmaker membri di BAFTA e artisti residenti alla Somerset House, e Claire Catterall, prima ideatrice della mostra e Senior Curator nella stessa istituzione artistica inglese.
Il nome della mostra già racconta tanto, ma non tutto: il mondo della produzione horror dagli anni Settanta del Novecento a oggi è infatti studiato ed esposto per il suo contributo che ha dato all'industria creativa dall'immaginario popolato di streghe, mostri e fantasmi. I risvolti concreti e il senso di questa mostra però non hanno niente di faceto né di fantasioso, come raccontano i curatori in una nota stampa: "The show looks beyond horror as a genre, instead taking it as a reaction and provocation to our most troubling times. The last five decades of modern British history are recast as a story of cultural shapeshifting told through some of our country’s most provocative artists. The Horror Show! offers a heady ride through the disruption of 1970s punk to the revolutionary potential of modern witchcraft, showing how the anarchic alchemy of horror – its subversion, transgression and the supernatural – can make sense of the world around us. Horror not only allows us to voice our fears; it gives us the tools to stare them down and imagine a radically different future".
Le opere in esposizione saranno più di duecento, selezionate con attezione tra gli oggetti, le fotografie e i quadri che meglio rappresentano la parte di cultura e l'emotività più turbolenta e spaventosa – almeno all'apparenza – della psiche britannica negli ultimi cinquant'anni. La mostra è suddivisa in tre atti che separano tre periodi temporali, e sono stati deliberatamente nominati Mostri, Fantasmi e Streghe. Ogni epoca è filtrata attraverso la lente archetipica di ciascun personaggio horror, grazie a una serie di lavori più o meno recenti, sempre collegati tematicamente.
Apre The Horror Show! la sezione Monster, approfondendo le turbolenze economiche e politiche degli anni Settanta e la divisione sociale degli anni Ottanta del novecento. In uno sfondo di disordini e forti rivolte, questa prima parte traccia le origini e l'ascesa dei personaggi che in quel tempo hanno sconvolto, distrutto e ridefinito la cultura britannica, esplorando in vari modi i molti "mostri" che affliggevano e affliggono la società contemporanea.
Il secondo atto dell'esposizione, Ghost, segna il crollo della cultura ipertrofica degli anni Ottanta e il tanto inquietante quanto drastico cambiamento nello stile di vita globale, verificatosi tra gli anni Novanta e i primi 2000. Punto di arrivo è la crisi finanziaria globale del 2008, l'alba consapevole dell'era digitale e l'avvio di invisibili guerre informatiche.
L'atto finale della mostra,Witch, si concentra sulla Gran Bretagna che ha attraversato il crollo finanziario del 2008 fino ai giorni nostri, celebrando l'emergere di una nuova generazione iperconnessa. Una congrega globale che abbraccia dinamiche fondate sull'integrazione e l'uguaglianza. Non è un caso che le ultime opere nel percorso espositivo siano The Goddess Who has Sky as Hair (2019) di Linder e Three Thousand and Thirty High Priestess of Pluto (2016) di Zadie Xa, artiste che rinunciano all'occulto patriarcale per favorire una nuova stregoneria artistica radicata nell'ecologia, nel femminismo e nell'autonomia corporea.
