Mostra Gerrit Rietveld – The Revolution of Space

Dal 17 Maggio al 16 Settembre 2012 il Vitra Design Museum dedica una importante retrospettiva a Gerrit Rietveld, designer olandese tra i più importanti del XX secolo.
Dopo una formazione da ebanista aderì al movimento neoplastico De Stijl fondato da Theo van Doesburg e Piet Mondrian. Una delle sue opere più famose la sedia rossa e blu del 1918 ha evidenti richiami nei disegni di Mondrian.
L'attività di Rietveld si concentrò in particolare sulla sperimentazione di vari materiali come legno lamellare e alluminio, impiegati nella creazione di mobili diventati leggendari come la sopracitata sedia rossa e blu, o la Zig-Zag Chair (1932).
A partire dal 1945 Rietveld si dedicò all'architettura realizzando tra gli altri il padiglione olandese per la biennale di Venezia del 1954.
La mostra costituirà anche un'importante occasione di confronto tra l'opera di Rietveld e i suoi contemporanei Piet Mondrian, Theo van Doesburg, Le Corbusier e Marcel Breuer.
